Cars that drive themselves

Can the spinning lasers on top of the Google car see my underwear?   To find out the answer, I asked the inventor of the device, David Hall.
“No, it can’t see your underwear but it can tell how tall you are and exactly how far you are standing in respect to a car.”
LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) is a new way of looking at the world.   With 64 spinning lasers, LIDAR images the world in a true 3D manner by measuring the distance from a stationary or moving position at a million points per second.   The image is recreated by the control software in a similar way as modern video gaming operates.
As a competitor in the second DARPA Grand Challenge, David Hall came up with the idea.  His first version of the LIDAR was the size of a spare tire spinning on top of his green Toyota Tundra.   It was a successful design and Hall went on to make a smaller version that was used on five of the six finishing vehicles in the recent Urban Grand Challenge.

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse Combines Excitement & Friendship

Cover Art for Superman/Batman Apocalypse DVD - Gary MiereanuHeroes on TV and in movies often have a buddy to share his/her adventures, joys, and hardships, to banter with, to watch the hero’s back, and to take the hero to task if he/she goes astray. Sharing in that friendship humanizes the hero for the audience and allows the audience to care and bond with the hero in a way one doesn’t get out of saving strangers. This, however, is intrinsically a problem with superheroes, as by definition, they are larger than life heroes, using extraordinary powers to take on extraordinary dangers that their human friends and colleagues cannot. Hence, they become solitary crusaders.
Nevertheless, the DC Universe is populated by more than one superhero. In the latest DC Universe animated original PG-13 movie DVD release, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, Superman and Batman pair up to save Superman’s cousin Kara from the evil Darkseid. From the moment Superman tells Batman that Kara may be his only living blood relative, and Batman says it is not ‘you’ going after the abducted young woman but ‘we’, the animated movie becomes more than just a series of gripping fights and daring feats. It becomes personal to the audience who is buying into the rescue of someone Superman cares deeply about and Batman cares about because of his friend. What ensues is not only an exciting adventure, but a glimpse into the rare friendship between two superheroes and the fun of superhero bantering. In my earlier article about the release of this DVD, Private Practice’s Tim Daly (the voice of Superman) and China Beach’s Kevin Conroy (the voice of Batman) give their takes on their characters’ friendship.

The Ten Best Animated Films Ever Made, 10-6

10. How to Train Your Dragon (PG, 2010) {In depth review}
The first film on this countdown and the most recent, Dreamwork’s surprise hit was genuinely funny, startlingly heartfelt, and beautifully animated.
Based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the film tells the story of young Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel), the kindhearted son of a Viking chief who dreams of joining the ranks of great Dragon-killers. But when Hiccup befriends a dragon he learns the true nature of the “beasts” that plague his island village.
The most striking aspect of How to Train Your Dragon, beyond its exceptional animation and thrilling story, is the pitch-perfect balance it strikes between sincerity and sardonic humor. Its well-crafted characters are instantly engaging, very funny, and warm from the outset. How to Train Your Dragon is sure to become an enduring family film.
9. Aladdin (G, 1992)
The third film released during Disney Animation Studio’s renaissance period of the 1990s, Aladdin boasted stunning animation, memorable characters, and an exquisite soundtrack.
One of the most adventurous stories in the Disney canon, Aladdin follows a poor young man living on the streets of Agrabah who finds himself by a twist of fate in possession of a magical lamp. With the help of the

Top 5 Halloween Cartoon Specials

Some of the Halloween-themed specials are still broadcast every year in October, due to popularity and nostalgia. The Peanuts gang, Garfield, The Simpsons, and Walt Disney interpreting the stories of Washington Irving are just a few examples.
It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
A bona fide classic beloved by hundreds of children around the U.S and originally broadcast in 1966, this cartoon continues to air every October and is widely available on DVD. The cartoon begins with Linus writing and mailing a letter to the "Great Pumpkin," as the Peanuts gang prep themselves for the long night of trick-or-treating. Linus is a loner in believing that the Great Pumpkin exists, having sat alone in the pumpkin patch the previous year waiting for him. He convinces Sally Brown to keep him company while the rest of the gang are in costume and trick-or-treating. Meanwhile, Snoopy is busy fighting the Red Baron on top of his doghouse and crash lands in the patch. When he rises, Linus mistakes him for the Great Pumpkin and Sally is distraught for believing in Linus and missing the festivities. The cartoon ends with Linus and Charlie sitting on a rock wall, with Linus defiantly convinced that the Great Pumpkin will appear next year.

Garfield's Halloween Adventure
This cartoon was produced in 1985 and has some very silly songs with nice melodies ("Scaredy Cat," "What Shall I Be?") sung by the legendary Lou Rawls. Garfield, dressed as a pirate and Odie, in costume as his sidekick, go out trick or treating for "all that candy, candy, candy." In a greedy attempt for more of the sweet stuff, Garfield steals a boat, and they end up in a house on an island where a creepy old man tells them that pirates had buried treasure under the house and are coming back for it "this very night." The old guy steals Garfield's boat and the pirate ghosts arrive at midnight. Garfield and Odie hide in a cupboard, Odie sneezes, and the ghosts find them. Garfield sports a huge smile and shuts the cupboard door. It's a rapturous comedic moment. This special is available on DVD and kids growing up in the 80s look upon this special with lots of nostalgia.
Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
There's been a live-action feature directed by Tim Burton as well as a made for TV movie with Jeff Goldblum. However, the Washington Irving-penned story of schoolteacher Ichabod Crane's fateful, nightly run in with the Headless Horsemen effectively come to life in this animated Disney short film with a great mix of comedy, suspense, and a memorable image of a pumpkin on-fire. Ichabod, perfectly animated as a lanky, feeble man, comes across hooting owls and hears whispers in the woods before his fateful encounter. Created in 1949, sung and narrated by Bing Crosby. It is available on DVD.
The Simpsons: "Treehouse of Horrors"Series
For the last 22 years, there has been a Halloween-themed Simpsons episode usually split into three short stories. Many episode segments have been inspired by other shows and movies. A few Twilight Zone episodes, The Shining, and even, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown have been parodied. A full list of the story titles and episodes can be found here.
Witch's Night Out (1978)
A bizarre, almost psychedelic theme song, crudely-drawn, goofy, monochrome characters, and a witch voiced by the late SNL star Gilda Radner, this is the most "special" animated show listed. It has never been released on DVD and rare VHS copies can sell for over $20. Siblings Small and Tender join forces with adults Nicely and Goody in throwing a Halloween party at a decrepit old mansion housed by a sweet old witch, who is despondent at the townsfolk for lacking Halloween spirit. When Small and Tenders' Halloween costumes fail to scare anybody in town, Miss Witch grants the two siblings their Halloween wish. She transforms Small into a werewolf and Tender into a ghost. Along for the ride is their babysitter Bazooey, who turns into Frankenstein. The party gets out of hand and chaos ensues when some townsfolk are creeped out by the monsters. But, all is well in this bizarre world, when everybody ends back at the mansion, partying the night away.
You may be able to catch some of these classic animated specials on network television in October. Adults who grew up in the 70s and 80s can wax nostalgic about these classic specials that they have probably seen multiple times, and are most likely showing them to their kids.

Ugly Americans Volume One DVD cover - image copyright 2010 Paramount Home Video
Monsters living and working alongside humans in New York City? That's the premise of Ugly Americans, the Comedy Central animated show created by Devin Clark and developed by former Simpsons writer David Stern. It follows the trials and tribulations of Mark Lilly, a bureaucrat trying to help vampires, werewolves and other monsters integrate into American society.
While the show has its moments, it currently relies more on its concept and design for its success, rather than execution.

Hot laptops cause toasted thighs, say researchers

Hardcore laptop users have something new to worry about: a medical condition known as erythema ab igne or, more colloquially, "toasted-skin syndrome." As CNN reports, up to now, this type of skin condition was most often seen in those who worked long hours in front of open fires or coal stoves. Doctors have also seen it in individuals who used hot pads or electric blankets extensively or who sat too close to other heat sources, such as radiators. Now, doctors are also seeing it in people who, despite the apparent discomfort, perch a too-hot laptop on their thighs for extended periods of time.
