The Penguins of Madagascar - I Was a Penguin Zombie DVD Review

Nickelodeon's The Penguins of Madagascar has been an audience hit for DreamWorks Animation, the television show based on the successful Madagascar feature film franchise. In addition to its respectable ratings, the show also earned a 2009 BAFTA for Best international children’s programming,

Just in time for Halloween, Paramount Home Video brings out the I Was a Penguin Zombie DVD, a collection of 8 spooky episodes. It offers solid laughs amid the penguin hijinks, and not as much King Julien as in previous editions.
Paramount Home Video Presents The Penguins of Madagascar: I Was a Penguin Zombie DVD
Given the title, it's not surprising that this DVD aims more towards the sci-fi/horror side of the animated comedy spectrum. Whether it's Skipper having a mishap with some toilet paper and muscle relaxants, leading the rest of the team to think he's undead ('I Was a Penguin Zombie'), Mort undergoing a bizarre transformation ('Mort Unbound'), Skipper and Marlene investigating the sewers underneath the Zoo ('Haunted Habitat'), Kowalski tearing the space/time continuum with his latest invention ('It's About Time') or Rico battling a possessed car, this DVD set adds some G-rated spookiness to the usual CGI comedy.
(Parents shouldn't worry about this DVD scaring little Bobby or Susan: the violence and terror are very cartoony. Besides, they're currently illegally downloading Nightmare on Elm Street off the Internet . . . oops, did I say that out loud?)
Another welcome development in this set is the comparatively less time given to King Julien. The fact that Nickelodeon was forced to replace original voice actor Sacha Baron Cohen for the series (Danny Jacobs currently voices King Julien) hurts the character, making his insane antics a lot less fun. It's like when Dan Castellaneta replaced Robin Williams for Disney's direct-to-video Aladdin sequels: Jacobs does a solid job in the role but Cohen offered that extra pop that's simply irreplaceable.

The Penguins of Madagascar: I Was a Penguin Zombie Offers Plenty of Laughs
Given The Penguins of Madagascar's ratings numbers – and merchandise sales – it's surprising to see Paramount Home Video withholding the extras from these DVD sets. Even the Spongebob Squarepants DVD sets offer more bang for buck.
At this point we're not sure if Paramount will eventually offer a Season One box set with all the trimmings – forcing fans to accept the double-dip – or this will be the only way viewers can get their penguin fix on home video. If the latter is the case, this is a shameful way for DreamWorks Animation, Nickelodeon and Paramount Home Video to package a series that has such a devoted fanbase.
Either way, The Penguins of Madagascar: I Was a Penguin Zombie offers decent laughs, so it gets a 3/5.
